MaineHousing Grant Update – Next Phase
Meeting on Tuesday, July 20th with Genesis Community Loan Fund’s
Liza Fleming-Ives and Island Fellow Mary Terry.

On Tuesday, June 22, Island Institute Fellow Mary Terry gave the YRHCorp
members present an overview of the MaineHousing grant available at this time
to build two rental houses (with option to own) on two of our Town owned
lots.
While the available $175,000 per house (total $350,000 for both per
Island) will cover most of the up front cost of such a project, there will
probably be the need to seek some additional funding in the form of a loan to
cover part of the project and associated costs.
The strong interest already shown by several Island residents to further
explore this opportunity has encouraged us to set up a meeting for a “walk
thru” of MSHA program details with Genesis’ Liza Fleming Ives to understand
more fully the costs, obligations, limitations, etc. that are involved with
this program.
The meeting is tentatively scheduled at 5:00 PM at the Casco Bay Lines
Conference Room on Tuesday, July 20. This time and place has been selected to
facilitate Liza’s travels to Portland and back home at a reasonable hour
and to make it convenient for commuters from Town to attend as well as
Islanders with travel on the 4:20 boat following work and be able to return on
the 7:15. While there is never a perfect time for a meeting this was
selected to try to accommodate as many variables as possible.
It is important for YRHCorp Trustees and potential housing candidates to
attend to fully understand whether we move forward with this. Please confirm
with me by e-mail or phone (766 4440) as a YRHCorp member or potential
candidate for this program by Wed., July 14 that you can or cannot attend
this meeting. Should we decide to continue on, this is a big step for the
YRHCorp. There is much risk, in my opinion, to move forward unless we have a
strong commitment from potential renters and/or owners of these homes that
this is something they definitely want.
I will re-confirm the time, date, and location of the meeting in a day or
so All details of this meeting are confirmed except the meeting room and
adequate positive response from members.
