A few months ago I succeeded Doug as President of MISCA; he forwarded your
e-mail to me today. I am going to attach what I have in my files - the MISCA
By-laws. Section 12 covers who may apply for a MISCA property and the steps in
dealing with the application.
To the by-laws I would add a few comments: we had to pare down the
provisions of who could register (be on the list to apply for a MISCA property)
because our original criteria (which included residency) didn't pass IRS review.
The MISCA Selection process seems somewhat lengthy and detailed. Our intent was
to make it as fair as possible in cases where several people might apply for
the same property. Of the five MISCA properties so far, four have had only
one applicant; the other had three applicants - and probably justified the
detail within the process.
I will forward your e-mail to Jes Stevens, who has kindly and generously,
been keeping our records. She may have on her computer a copy of the
registration and application forms.

My name is Sandie Scheurman. Alden Robinson, our Island Institute Fellow
and Mark Greene, our Founding Father and Housing Administrator, gave me your
name as a contact regarding MISCA. I am working with Alden and Mark on Year
Round Housing Committee (YRHC), and more specifically, am a member of the Year
Round Housing Application and Selection Committee YRHASC on Long Island in
Casco Bay.
Mark shared the Genesis Fund article on MISCA recently, and I have
volunteered to follow up with you. Congratulations on the success of your program to
date!! I have visited Monhegan on three occasions during the last twenty
years for both business and pleasure, and have seen the change, and the beauty
of that which remains the same on Monhegan. Most recently, I visited with
Carson and Jeannie Schnell during 2006 in a business capacity, selling home
improvement products for TrueNorth Home Systems, (_www.gotruenorth.com_
(http://www.gotruenorth.com/) ) . The Schnells are wonderful people, and so committed
to their community.
Specifically, we are hoping MISCA would be willing to share info on their
application and selection process, for our use as we are currently developing
ours. Other members of our committee have communicated with other islands to
obtain this information and have had much success with receiving same to date.
Do you have, and are you willing to share any documents and other info you
might have that an individual would use to apply to your program? Any info on
how your program operates, etc? If not, are you willing to share the
contact info for someone who would share this into with us? Our next meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, January 16, and it is my hope that I would have
something in hand to share with the committee prior to that time. My email address
